We have carefully researched the pet insurance market to find out who offers the best pet insurance for Bengal Cats.
There are a number of factors that you need to take into account, such as the overall health of the breed, their personality, temperament, the age of your Bengal cat, known hereditary medical problems with the breed, the cost of medical conditions and how much you should insure them for.
To answer these questions we need to understand a bit about the breed itself.
Fairly new to the UK, the Bengal was first bred in the United States of America. Bengals have strong, athletic bodies, they are medium to large sized cats with marbled or spotted coats. Created by crossing the Asian Leopard Cat with domestic breeds like the Egyptian Mau, Ocicats and Abyssinians, this good looking, outgoing breed is a popular choice as a family pet or companion.
Bred in the United States in the 1970s, this breed was only recognised very recently by the GCCF (The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy) in 1997. Created to resemble a mini leopard but with an affectionate nature, Bengals are the only successful mating between a wild cat and a domestic cat, but does not boast having the wild traits of the Asian Leopard Cat.
The good news is that generally Bengals are a healthy, well bred breed. However as with all animals, there are a few health issues which may occur throughout your pets life.
It is from these issues, that you can get an idea of vet fee costs, in a worst case scenario and this will help you assess not only the level of cover required in your cat insurance policy, but whether you are likely to need a longer term policy or settle for cheaper short term cover.
Potential medical issues for your Bengal are ;Flat Chested Kitten Syndrome (FCKS) - This condition causes kittens to develop an abnormal rib cage, that looks like they have been stepped on.
There is not much statistical information available, but there appears to be a higher prevalence in Bengal Kittens, with some studies reporting a bias towards male kittens.
Cases can be mild with a ridge along the rib cage to an almost pancake look, where the sternum almost touches the spine. In some kittens the condition will resolve itself, whereas others will continue to suffer from it.
The cause is also open to debate, with some experts pointing to areas such as Nutrition, premature or large litters, un-diagnosed tumours, respiratory tract infection and environmental conditions.
There is no clear treatment, but an x-ray may be required to diagnose the extent of the condition, which normally costs around £200. Some vets recommend a course of steroids and antibiotics.
Patellar luxation - Simply described as a kneecap which slides off to the side of the leg. There may be no clinical signs and the condition can appear gradually until it is well advanced.
The key to treatment is early detection and your cat may only require arthritis medication. In more severe cases surgery may be required to reset the kneecap and stop it from popping out. Typical charges are around £2,000.
Although this condition appears to be inherited, there is no specific test and whilst this issue occurs in many breeds of cat, Bengals are at a higher risk for this condition than others.
Hip dysplasia - A hereditary disease in cats and common in Bengals specifically. Hip Dysplasia is a degenerative disease causing abnormality of the hip joints triggering lameness in the hind legs, which can make walking difficult.
Diagnosis is through examination and x-rays which can cost up to £500. The majority of treatments are through pain and anti-inflammatory medication, as well as nutritional supplements. The worst case scenario is surgery to remove the deformed head altogether using the muscles to create a false joint, or total hip replacement which can cost up to £5,000.
Pyruvate Kinase deficiency – A condition where there is an absence of the Pyruvate Kinase enzyme, which cats are born with, but that doesn't normally show symptoms of until the reach the age of three.
The condition is a genetic mutation and linked to specific cat breeds such as Bengals. Common symptoms are weight loss, weakness, lethargy, tiredness, shortness of breath, lack of interest in food, jaundice and seizures.
Normally a complete blood cell count, or a genetic test will reveal the condition, and although there is currently no cure, treatment plans concentrate on symptom management and prolonging the animals life. Recovery depends on the severity of the condition.
Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) – Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) – This disease causes the photoreceptor cells to deteriorate over time, which eventually leads to blindness.
Cats generally suffer from two forms of PRA. The first is known as early onset or inherited (known as retinal dysplasia. This can be diagnosed in kittens around the age of three months.
The second is late onset PRA which usually occurs in adult cats between the ages of two and five years. In most cases complete loss of vision will occur within one – two years. Although there is currently no cure, the cost of consultancy fees and an Electroretinogram used to detect this condition is in the region of £400 – £500.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy - The most common form of heart disease and one that has been diagnosed in Bengals. The condition causes an enlargement of the heart muscle.
This is a hereditary disease and current research is being carried out to try and identify the mutant genes.
Most responsible breeders will have their animals tested for heart murmurs on a regular basis. Normally a specialist cardiologist is required to diagnose the condition using an echo cardiogram.
The Bengal tends to be affectionate to everyone in the home, they can form a strong bond with one person and they are becoming a more and more popular choice as they are very intelligent, and remain playful even in maturity. A wonderful choice for both a family pet and companion, the Bengal loves playing and watching water and will easily jump in the shower or in a pond!
Although not lap cats, the Bengal prefer to be around people and don’t like being left on their own for long periods of time. They love the outdoors as they have a great ‘hunting’ instinct, but you may want to keep them as an indoor cat rather than them straying too far around built up areas. If keeping them indoors, remember to introduce lots of playthings, and platforms, as they love being up high.
With a short coat, grooming can be a weekly routine to keep a luxurious shine. Hair tends to shed in Spring and Autumn, so extra brushing will be required around these times.
It is also important to check the cat’s ears for wax build up as this can lead to issues later if not checked regularly.
If you are asthmatic or have an allergy, it’s sensible to check that a Bengal cat is suitable for your household.
Bengal cats are about 20-25 CM height and weigh about 7 Kg.
The Bengal cat likes dogs, especially if they are brought up together but can be a bit territorial around other cats. It’s best if two cats are brought up together to avoid any issues.
A social breed, the Bengal is a great family pet. They will happily spend hours playing games with children. Any interaction with younger children should always be supervised.
We mentioned how noisy and talkative Bengals can be. Here is the proof!
There are a few factors that need to be taken into account when calculating the cost of cat insurance for your Bengal. The area in which you live with your cat (City vets generally charge more than country vets and as a result premiums are more expensive), the breed of cat, it's age, the amount your purchased your cat for and whether it is an indoor cat or an outdoor cat.
The lifespan of a Bengal cat is around 12 – 16 years and a well bred Bengal kitten can cost anywhere between £600 – £2,000.
A common issue regarding pet insurance is the yearly increases in premium come renewal time. Although cat insurance is generally cheaper than dog insurance, the reason for annual cost increases is the same. As your pet gets older, the statistical chance of them suffering from a medical condition also increases and this has to be factored into account when calculating renewal premiums.
To help illustrate just what you can expect price wise as your cat gets older, we have produced a graph as a guide to how prices increase over time.
The criteria we used in the graph were based on a male pedigree Bengal cat costing £1,000 and a combined market average of all Lifetime policies who offered a vet fee limit of £2,000 or more.
It can be difficult choosing which type of cat insurance to go for. Do you opt for a cheaper policy with shorter term cover or spend a bit more and get peace of mind that a lifetime policy gives you?
A big factor in the decision making process is cost. So to help you, the graph below illustrates the differences in cost between accident only insurance, a time limited policy, a maximum benefit and a lifetime policy. Once again we have taken a market average of all policies in each category offering at least £2,000 of vet fees cover, based on a 5 year old male Bengal cat.
If you do not understand the exact differences between each policy, don’t worry, we have put together a Pet Insurance Buyers Guide that clearly explains the pro’s and con’s of each type of policy, as well as a detailed explanation of the different scenarios a pet insurance policy can cover.
This is the really important bit, where we divulge our research and tell you about the best pet insurance for your Bengal cat. We have given you an idea of how prices increase as your pet gets older and the difference in average prices between the levels of cover and type of cat insurance policies on offer.
Whilst we are unable to recommend specific policies based on individual circumstances, after a careful study of the market and not just those on comparison websites, we are able to show you the best pet insurance policies for your Bengal cat.
Our suggestions are based on set guidelines that take into account our own ratings and reviews, as well as price. We check each recommendation directly on the Pet Insurers website.
Of course price is important, but you need to be careful and not choose a policy just because it is cheap. You may find that the cheapest policy doesn’t offer enough cover and you end up having to move Insurers or not having a claim covered. We hope our endorsements offer a balance of cover, service and price.
Quotations are based on a one year old, a six year old and a ten year old pedigree male Bengal cat costing £1,000 and living indoors in the West Midlands area. The highlighted policies are those that we rated 3 stars or higher in our review process.
