The Sphynx Cat Insurance Review
OVERVIEW OF THE SPHYNX CAT
A medium sized cat, the Sphynx Cat has grown in popularity due to their hairless and unusual wrinkled skin. An exotic looking animal, this cat is loving and affectionate and sturdier than its slight frame looks.
The Sphynx is a delicate and exotic looking breed, if not a little unusual.
HISTORY OF THE SPHYNX CAT
In the mid-sixties and originating from Canada, this breed was developed by accident when a domestic shorthair had a litter producing a hairless kitten and when it was old enough, it was bred back to its mother. The result of this was a mixed litter of normal haired and hairless kittens. Some of the hairless kittens were exported to Europe to continue breeding and first reached the UK in 1988.
HEALTH OF YOUR SPHYNX CAT
A typical lifespan of the Sphynx is between 13 and 15 years.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) – breeders should have stud cats tested
The sphynx cat is a strong hardy breed with few health problems and though the breed doesn’t have any genetic disease predispositions, a few health conditions have been known to affect sphynx cats, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which is a disease that causes thickening of the heart muscle and can be detected with an echocardiogram, and hereditary myopathy, a condition affecting muscle function

You can minimise any health problems by making sure your cat comes from a registered breeder and that you see the Kitten with its mother before you buy. Check the premises / home.
PERSONALITY AND TEMPERAMENT OF YOUR SPHYNX CAT
The Sphynx love their routine and don’t like changes, especially round home. They like being fed at the same time each day.
The Sphynx cats love to ‘talk’ and will have long conversations with their owners. They want to be involved in everything around them, will follow their owners around, and are very kitten like in their activities. They are happy to be with another pet of their own breed but will get along with other cats and dogs too.
A Sphynx can get sunburnt so take care letting them outdoors.
GROOMING/CARE OF YOUR SPHYNX CAT
Even though the Sphynx has no hair, you will still need to check the wrinkles and creases of the skin fairly regularly to make sure there are no infections.
It is also important to check the cat’s ears for wax build up as this can lead to issues later if not checked regularly.
FEEDING OF YOUR SPHYNX CAT
Try to gain a feeding schedule from your breeder to avoid tummy upsets. A kitten diet can be changed but this will need to be a gradual process. Cats don’t tend to be fussy eaters but it is important to keep a check on your cats’ weight for overall health and wellbeing.

THE SPHYNX WITH OTHER PETS
The Sphynx will get on with dogs especially when they have grown up together and will like growing up with a cat of the same breed.
THE SPHYNX WITH CHILDREN
A great pet for a family of older children, these cats are social and outgoing and love interaction with the family.
Important: Always make sure you go and visit the breeder of the cat you are buying. Never send money for a deposit/full payment in advance of meeting them. To find out what to look for when buying a puppy see advice here
